TIRUPUR: The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, in coordination with the Tirupur municipality, will soon take up projects to improve the environmental conditions of 88 slums that house 36 per cent of the town population. After visiting the slums, along with MLA C.Govindasamy and Board officials on Saturday, Board Managing Director D. Vivekanandan told The Hindu that the Government would strive to improve the living condition of slum-dwellers. Mr. Vivekanandan visited the slums at Perichipalayam, KVR Nagar, Jammanai Pallam, TMC Colony, Poombuhar Nagar, Jeeva Nagar, Anaimedu and Sellandiammanthurai and several places. According to the municipal statistics, 1.26 lakh residents live in slums. The average slum population in the State is 18 per cent. Mr. Vivekanandan said the Board was planning to provide drainage, water supply, streetlights and toilets. "If the slum-dwellers are ready to move out, we can plan construction of multi-storey apartments. If the Tirupur municipality comes forward to offer 50 acres outside the town, we could think of constructing 5,000-6,000 tenements," he said. With the budget allocation, the Board could get funds under special schemes for rehabilitation projects. Mr. Vivekanandan hinted that the Government was willing to take up some projects to upgrade a few slums this year itself. Most of the residents, who reside on the banks of the Noyyal and other tributaries, complained of water logging owing to lack of drainage. They also sought drinking water supply, land titles, retaining walls and streetlights.
