GULBARGA: The flood situation continued to be grim in villages on the banks of the Krishna with a marked increase in discharge from the Narayanpur Dam in Surpur Taluk in the district into the river. Situation in villages on the banks of the Bhima showed improvement with a sharp decrease in the release of water from Ujjini and Veerbhatkal dams in Maharashtra since Friday. Sources said the authorities in the Narayanpur Dam opened 19 gates to release 3.54 lakh cusecs of water since the inflow into the dam continued to be very high at 3.53 lakh cusecs in the evening. Flood waters submerged standing crops in more areas on the banks of the Krishna. About 30 families in Thinthani village on the banks of the Krishna have been shifted to the relief camp as the flood water started entering their houses. Motorised boats have been kept ready near Thinthani bridge and at various places along the river for evacuation of people in case of emergency. Flow in the Bhima decreased owing to less release of water from two reservoirs in Maharashtra. The release of water from these two reservoirs which was constant at two lakh cusecs and above from July 31, was reduced to 41,000 cusecs on Saturday as the inflow into these two dams came down drastically. Water level of the river at the Devangoan Bridge in Sonna Village near Afsalpur town was 403.25 metres now. Flood waters have started receding from affected villages including Hire Mannur, Shivur and Kudiganur.
