CHENNAI: General secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) Vaiko urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday that the Sri Lankan police should not be trained on Indian soil. A party release said here that Mr. Vaiko had told Dr. Singh over telephone that he had information that India continued to provide training to the Sri Lankan police in the country, though the trainees had been despatched from Coimbatore. "Training them in any part of India will hurt the feelings of the Tamils," he said. Dr. Singh had told him that he would consider his plea, the release said. The Prime Minister also agreed to look into Mr. Vaiko's another request to give the Tamil MPs belonging to the island an appointment to meet him, the release said. "Let them send a letter [seeking an appointment] then I will consider," Dr. Singh had told the MDMK leader, it said. Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani urged the Centre not to provide training facilities to Sri Lankan armymen or policemen in any part of the country. Fortyfour Lankan police personnel, who underwent civil training at the CRPF training College, Coimbatore, left the college after protests from various political parties in Tamil Nadu. In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Veeramani wanted the Centre to ensure that no military or civil training was given to Sri Lankans in India as it would hurt the sentiment of people in Tamil Nadu. He also thanked Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for taking up the issue with the Centre after which the Sri Lankan police personnel left the training college.
