DUSU polls all set to go hi-tech

Staff Reporter

Permission to use EVMs sought

NEW DELHI: The Delhi University Students' Union polls might actually be paperless this time round. Stepping stone to bigger political pastures for students, the University has also decided to give them the taste of the real thing with electronic voting machines.

Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental had written to the Chief Election Commissioner a month ago asking permission to use electronic voting machines. With the Commission seeming to be quite open to the idea, the University might be cutting down on paper, manpower and time.

"We will be able to get these machines this time. After the first letter that the Vice-Chancellor wrote, he has written another one to the Election Commissioner. The Commission seems to be happy. But the final decision will have to be taken later," said Proctor Gurmeet Singh.

A big step towards reducing the huge manpower needed, the voting machines will also go a long way in cutting down on the time taken for counting of votes.

"At the moment we have police personnel and we use about 800 men for the counting of votes. The voting machines will give us the result in ten minutes,'' pointed out Dr. Singh.

In an attempt to ensure that students get a feel of the adult world, the University has taken a strong stand on defacing walls.
