Semifinalists spotted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Arjuna Ajayakumar, Varun Nair, Revanth Kishore Kumar and Ashiq Shyam moved into the semifinals in the boys' under-10 section of the G.V. Raja memorial all-Kerala tennis tournament at the TTC courts on Saturday.

The quarterfinal line-up in the boy's under-12 section has been completed. In the girl's under-12 section, Sneha Susan Thomas and J. Jeriya moved into the semifinals.

The results: Men (first round): A. Anand bt Sarath Lal 0-6, 6-1, 6-1; M.R. Rajendran bt B. Azeeb 6-1, 7-6; S. Ramnath bt Devassy Jose 6-4, 7-6; M.S. Krishnakumar bt Reejo Varghese 6-0, 6-1; Samuel Jesukumar bt K. Shaji 6-0, 6-3.

Boys: Under-16: First round: Antony Renjith Roy bt Vijay Sreekumar 9-8; Aravind bt S.S. Nikhil 9-2, Anand George bt P.S. Harikumar 9-7.

Under-14: Second round: Anand George bt Vijay Sreekumar 9-2; Karthik Narayanan bt Vishu Padmakumar 9-1; Achuth B. Nair bt Gokul M. Nair 9-1; Vignesh V. Gopal bt Satish Jesudas 9-0; Akhil Raj bt Jose Philip 9-2.

RSC plans football academy

At Kochi, yhe Regional Sports Centre plans to start a football academy for under-15 boys at Kadavanthra with some top former internationals supervising the show.

According to RSC secretary George Thomas, C.C. Jacob will hold overall charge while Olympian O. Chandrasekharan will be the technical advisor.

Former stars, including Olympian Simon Sunderraj, Sethumadhavan, Victor Manjila, T.A. Jafar, K.P. Williams and M.M. Jacob will be the coaches.

The centre will soon hold selection trials. An under-15 team will also be formed which will figure in district and State school-level tournaments.
