Nine meet records tumble

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nine meet records were set on the first day of the Thiruvananthapuram district senior aquatic championships at the Water Works Swimming Pool on Saturday.

V. Remya of Pulari hogged the limelight by setting a record double.

Remya erased one of the long-standing records as she broke Saritha's 14-year-old record (2:33.21) in 200m freestyle by clocking 2:24.20. Remya's other record came in the 400m individual medley.

Another long-standing record also bit the dust in the 50m freestyle event.

A.R. Rohini set the new mark in heats as she clocked 30.17s to sink I. Remya's mark (31.13) set in 1994.

The results:

Men: 50m freestyle: R. Anuraj (Fighters) 26.68 (NMR); 1500m freestyle: R.V. Jithin Viswan (Priyadarshini) 19:02.54 (NMR).

200m freestyle: Sarma S.P. Nair (YMA) 2:14.96; 200m backstroke: R.A. Anuraj (Navayugam) 2:41.73; 100m butterfly: K.C. Sreejith (Dolphin) 1:02.56; 100m breaststroke: B. Suresh Kumar (YMA) 1:15.77; 400m individual medley: L.G. Muralikrishnan (Priyadarshini) 5:27.63.

Women: 50m freestyle: A.R. Rohini (Dolphin) 30.21 (NMR); 800m freestyle: Sarnya S. Nair (Priyadarshini) 10:45.56 (NMR); 200m freestyle: V. Remya (Pulari) 2:24.20 (NMR).

50m backstroke: C. Archa (Dolphin) 35.89 (NMR); 200m backstroke: K.R. Anu (Royal) 2:53.95 (NMR).

100m breaststroke: B.R. Neenu (Dolphin) 1:33.88; 400m individual medley: V. Remya (Pulari) 5:45.55 (NMR).

Merit George in final

At Thiruvananthapuram, Top-seeded Merit George took another step towards retaining the women's singles title in the 22nd T.K.V. Memorial all-Kerala ranking badminton tournament as she defeated Nima Lakshmi 21-18, 21-15 in the semifinals at the Sree Moolam Club courts here on Saturday.

In Sunday's final, the No. 1 seed will take on M. Sruthi, who opened the exit door for Miral George (21-18, 21-15) in the second semifinal.

In men's action, top-seeded Sanave Thomas and second-seeded Joy T. Antony made it to the semifinals with effortless ease. While Sanave prevailed over Allwyn Francis 2-18, 21-16, Joy defeated Sankar Gopan 21-16, 21-14. The remaining two berths in the round of last four were taken by Ayyappan Krishnan and Antony K. Jacob with wins over T.K. Jamshid (21-13, 21-14) and C.K. Rajesh (21-15, 21-17) respectively.

Easy for Nimmy, Meenu

At Kochi, Top-seed Nimmy A. George and No.2 Meenu Rajendran, opened their campaign with comfortable wins in the Teenodhayam Trophy Kerala State women's chess championship at the Regional Sports Centre, Kadavanthra, on Saturday evening.

Sixteen players, including eight from the host district, figure in the three-day event.

The results: A. Neenu (Kzd) lost to Nimmy A. George (Ekm), Meenu Rajendran (Tvm) bt Teenu Thomas (Ekm).

M. Ankitha (Tsr) lost to E. Sheena (Knr), Aswathy Balagopalan (Tsr) bt Aarcha Gowri Varma (Ekm), C.H. Meghna (Ekm) lost to A. Niji (Kzd), R. Aparna (Knr) bt Alka Raj (Ekm).
