13-foot king cobra captured

Staff Correspondent

DEADLY: The king cobra that was caught at Karada.

Madikeri: King cobras are a rare sight in Kodagu. A 13-foot-long king cobra, one of the few venomous snakes in the world, was caught by "Snake" Satish at Karada in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu on Friday evening.

The sight of the reptile standing with its little hood open was a rare sight for several hundred of villagers. Mr. Satish had received a call from Karada village two months ago about the presence of the snake. On Friday, people who had seen the snake rest near a tank alerted him. But when he and his friend Manju Kalaiah of the Coorg Adventure Club, were approaching the snake by clearing weeds from one side of the bund of the tank, it slithered into a burrow.

Its head went into the burrow first, leaving behind four feet from the tail side open. On being pulled by its tail, the cobra resisted the efforts of Mr. Satish and his friends, only to coil back its head from the burrow to "warn" its captors. Mr. Satish later tamed the snake and captured it. The snake would be released into the forests on Sunday.
