Sarpanch candidate hacked to death

VISAKHAPATNAM: One of the candidates for the sarpanch post of Tenugupudi panchayat in Devararapalle mandal, about 50 km. from here, was allegedly hacked to death on Friday. The body of Narayudu, 30, was found with deep cuts on his neck on the river bed of the Sarada on the village outskirts on Saturday morning, Anakapalle DSP G. Haragopal said. He was contesting with the support of Telugu Desam Party. — Staff Reporter

3 killed as tractor falls into canal

Kakinada: Three women were killed and 35 others were injured when a tractor in which they were travelling from Velampalem to Biyyampet for agricultural work lost control and fell into Burada canal on Saturday. The deceased were identified as Vasamsetti Gangamma (40) Koppisetti Lovakumari (19) and Chollangi Varalakshmi (20). — Correspondent

Dismissed from service

HYDERABAD: The Government dismissed a Sub-Inspector of Prohibition and Excise department from service and total gratuity and pension of another Inspector following their conviction in corruption cases.

Anti-Corruption Bureau had arrested SI M.A. Rahim 12 years ago on charge of receiving Rs. 3,000 bribe, a press release said. He was working at Mamda range in Adilabad. A special court sentenced him to two-year rigorous imprisonment. Inspector K. John Devasahayam was arrested eight years ago for accepting Rs. 10,000 bribe. A special court sentenced him to undergo three-year rigorous imprisonment. — Staff Reporter

CPI team to visit flood-hit areas

HYDERABAD: A three-member team of CPI State Council, headed by Secretary K. Narayana, will tour the flood-hit districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam to assess the damage. CPI-affiliated AP Ryotu Sangham leaders K.Ramakrishna and R.Venkaiah demanded payment of ex-gratia of Rs.2 lakhs each to the families of those killed in the floods during the last two days. . — Special Correspondent

Liquor sachets seized

Madanapalle: The Prohibition and Excise personnel arrested two persons and seized 650 sachets of Karnataka State liquor at Buchipalli cross in B. Kothakota mandal on Saturday. A moped was also seized from the duo.

Rajasekhar, one of the accused belongs to Kayalavaripalle while his namesake belongs to Peddapalem.

The raids were carried out under the supervision of Prohibition and Excise Circle Inspector Chandran. - Correspondent

Breast-feeding week

KURNOOL: Prof G. Ramprasad of Kurnool Medical College said 10.9 million babies die across the world due to the non-availability of mother's milk before they reach five years. He was speaking at a function at GVR Hospital in connection with the breast-feeding week.

He said most of the mothers were ignoring the fact that breastfeeding is beneficial - both to the baby and mother. — Staff Reporter

Stir against cable TV charges

ELURU: Workers of Sri Krishna Jute Mill staged a rasta roko on the Grand National Trunk Road here on Saturday under the joint auspices of Jute Sramika Sangham and Jute Karmika Samakhya, seeking prosecution of the cable TV operators for alleged tax evasion. They expressed resentment against a steep hike in the charges that made the cable TV programmes out of reach for the poor in the city. S. Appa Rao, general secretary of the Jute Sramika Sangham, and P. Kanaka Reddy, president of the Jute Karmika Samakhya, spoke.

Collector thanked

MACHILIPATNAM: N. Venkateswara Prasad, social worker and President of India awardee, has said district Collector Navin Mittal has asked secretary of the Krishna district Indian Red Cross Society to supply uniforms to ST students of some elementary schools. The students had no uniforms because of poverty, he said and thanked the Collector. - Correspondent

New train inaugural

MACHILIPATNAM: Badiga Ramakrishna, local MP, and Perni Venkatramaiah, MLA, have stated that the Machilipatnam-Tirupati passenger train service will be inaugurated on August 13 by Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu at the Machilipatnam railway station. Local people Mr. Ramakrishna for striving for the new train service. The SER General Manager and other top railway officers would attend the function.

Donation for Surya temple construction

Kakinada: Two software engineers from Bangalore and grandchildren of Srikutam Raja - Arun Kumar and Swarna Kumary - have donated Rs.1.50 lakhs for construction of a golden Surya temple on the premises of Sri Bhanulingeswara Swamy temple here.

The cheque was handed over to Mutha Sasidhar, son of local MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna, at a function held on the temple premises on Saturday. - Correspondent

Kakinada: Floodwater continues to affect normal life in low-lying areas in the agency and Konaseema areas. However, the sunny weather on Saturday brought respite from two days of wet spell. East Godavari district received 1,065.7 mm rainfall during last 24 hours. Y. Ramavaram mandal received the highest rainfall of 120.6 mm. - Correspondent

YSR to visit bereaved families

VIZIANAGARAM : Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will visit Duddikallu in G.L. Puram mandal on Sunday morning to console the bereaved families of Vanakabadi.

The families would be brought to Duddikallu from the inaccessible village where 11 tribals were killed in land slips on Thursday.

Kakinada : The HAEEG (help aid employees of East Godavari) organisation with the Collector as its chairman extended financial assistance of Rs.10,000 each for the families of the children who were injured or lost their lives in the rain. - Correspondent

MRO killed in accident

VIZIANAGARAM : Mandal Revenue Officer of Balijipeta Raghuram Chand (55) was killed and mandal development officer Kiran Kumar injured when an oil tanker allegedly hit their scooter on the NH 43 under Burjavalasa police station limits on Saturday.

The MDO was admitted to the Government hospital here. The MRO, a native of Amalapuram, is survived by his wife and three children.
