HYDERABAD: The CPI has come to the defence of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and APCC president K. Keshava Rao in the wake of notices issued by High Court asking them to show cause why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. The party was of the view that the notices of contempt of court were invoked only when someone questioned the integrity of a judge. In this case, Dr. Reddy and Mr. Rao had done nothing of the sort. They had only reacted to a court judgement, CPI Central Secretariat member and MP, S. Sudhakar Reddy, and State secretary, K. Narayana, told a news conference here on Saturday. They added that all court verdicts would come under public scrutiny. The CPI had also opposed anti-poor and anti-working class judgements by the court in the past. Mr. Reddy denied reports of moves by the Left to pull down UPA Government with the support of BJP over the Indo-US nuclear deal. He admitted that the relations between Left and UPA had indeed strained a great deal but they had not reached a flashpoint. The Government took the Left into confidence on several issues. The Left parties were sceptical about the intentions of the Government in striking the deal. The decision of the Government to go ahead with uranium processing plants in Nalgonda against public opinion confirmed fears of the Left that it towed US nuclear policy.
