3 die in Karimnagar

Residents of low-lying areas evacuated

KARIMNAGAR: Torrential rain during the last three days reportedly claimed three lives in Karimnagar district on Saturday. Several low-lying areas were inundated, tanks were breached and houses collapsed following the rain.

A 12-year-old, N. Laxmi, died when her house collapsed in a hamlet of Nampalli village of Vemulawada mandal. S. Rajitha died when a tree fell on her hut in Ramagundam mandal. K. Rajamani (45) died when the wall collapsed on her in Jagtial town due to the rains.

Road connectivity was cut off in many important routes in the district due to overflowing of rivulets. Karimnagar-Adilabad route was disconnected following overflowing of the Godavari. The road from Karimnagar to Vemulawada temple too was flooded following the overflowing of Mulavagu after a gap of several years.

The bus services between Kaleshwaram and Warangal, Manthani and Mahadevpur have been cancelled. Residents of low-lying colonies in Manthani have been evacuated to a special camp at the Government Junior College due to overflowing of Vokkalavagu.

Several minor irrigation tanks were breached in Kamalapur and Sircilla mandals. Houses collapsed in Choppadandi, Huzurabad and Karimnagar mandals. Crops were also damaged in Mahadevpur and other mandals.

After 11 years, the medium irrigation projects of Upper manair Dam in Narmal village and Shanigaram project in Bejjanki mandal received copious inflows. Almost all the tanks and lakes in the district are filled to the brim.

The district reported an average of 18 cm rainfall on Saturday. The upland Keshavapatnam mandal reported a record 41.4 cm, followed by 25 cm in Saidapur, 28 cm in Thimmapur, while Peddapalli, Ramagundam, Gambhiraopeta, Eligaid, Manthani, Kamanpur, Kataram, Mahamutharam mandals received 22 cm.
