NIZAMABAD: At least six persons died and over 1,070 houses were damaged following heavy rain and floods in the district since Friday night. Several localities, including half-a-dozen slums in the district headquarter town were marooned as rainwater gushed into habitations. According to official sources, six persons -- Sailoo (22) of Hajipur in Yellareddy mandal, Chakali Asanna (70) of Boyagalli in the town, Komaraiah (51) of Talla Rampad in Morthad mandal and T. Estari (45) of Manikbandar in Makloor mandal -- died in wall collapses. Shaik Abdullah (24) of Pocharam in Banswada mandal was washed away in a rivulet near his village, while Saya Goud (14) of Khanapur in the same mandal drowned after jumping into a tank to avert honeybees. Over 1,000 families in slum areas of Koja Colony, Habeebnagar and Khilla were shifted to six relief camps in the town. The official sources in the Collectorate said 209 houses were fully damaged and 801 partly-affected across the district . Scores of trees, telephone and electric polls and transformers were uprooted due to gales badly affecting traffic movement and power supply. Mayor D. Sanjay, district Collector I.S. Sri Naresh and Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha visited low-lying and flood affected areas in the town and directed the municipal personnel to pump out water.
