CHENNAI: In a major infrastructure upgradation move, the State Government has decided to convert 99 major district roads totalling 1902.406 km to State Highways. Another 65 district roads (totalling 761.83 km) will also be upgraded as highways, while 273 district roads (totalling 3811.954 km) will be made into major district roads. Based on a proposal sent by the Chief Engineer (Highways), the Government issued an order on Friday. Some of the major district roads that are set to become State highways are: Chennai-Pulicat Road, Pallavaram-Thuraipakkam Road, Tambaram-Mudichur Road, Madhavaram-Red Hills Road, Thirumangalam-Mogappair Road and Kodambakkam-Sriperumbudur Road, Chennai-Ennore Road (all in Tiruvallur district), Cheyur-Vandavasi Road, Chennai-Vandalur-Kelambakam Road, (Chengelput district), Bargur-Thirupathur Road (Vellore district), Tindivanam-Marakkanam Road and Villupuram-Tiruvannamali Road (Villupuram district), Kumbakonam-Karaikkal Road (Thanjavur district), Vathalagundu-Usilampatti Road and Kodai Ghat Road, (Dindigul district), Dharapuram-Tiruppur Road (Erode district), Thoothukudi-Tiruchendur Road and Thiruchendur-Kanyakumari Road (Tuticorin district), Ambai-Papanasam Road (Tirunelveli district) and Sattur-Sivakasi-Srivilluputhur Road (Virudhunagar district).
