CHENNAI: This year's Raja Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award was presented to Tamil scholar Sirpi Balasubramaniam at a function held here on Saturday.

Conferring the award on Dr. Balasubramaniam, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan eulogised the Chettinad Raja family for its contribution to education and development of Tamil.

He said that at a time when education was inaccessible to poor students, especially those belonging to Backward Class communities, it was Annamalai University founded by Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar that helped them.

But for the university, education could have been a distant dream for them.

Besides, the university was the backbone for development of Tamil as from here many Tamil scholars emerged.

The Raja Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award, instituted by Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust, carries a cash of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation.

M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Pro-Chancellor of the Annamalai University and patron of the trust, in his welcome address, said he was happy to note that a majority of the Ministers in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet, including Mr. Anbazhagan, were alumni of the university.

D. Gnana Sundaram, former Head of the Tamil Department, Pachaiyappa's College, said the contribution of the Raja's family to education was immense.

M.A.M.R. Muthiah, president of the trust, read the citation. Dr. Balasubramaniam thanked the trust for conferring the award.
