Airport to resume operations today

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam airport, which was closed for three days following heavy rain, will resume operations on Sunday.

Airports Authority of India General Manager H.S. Suresh told The Hindu after inspecting the airport complex on Saturday that they were ready to resume flight operations. He said all regular flights would be operated from Sunday.

This was the third time the airport was closed in less than a year following heavy downpour. In October 2005, the air connectivity was suspended with excess water from Meghadrigedda reservoir flooding the tarmac and main terminal. Water had also damaged X-ray baggage checking machine, conveyer belt and VIP lounge.

Following public outcry over the damage caused to the city's brand value, a retaining wall was constructed to prevent entry of Meghadrigedda waters into the airport compound. However, this time, overflowing water from the hills partially submerged it.

Mr. Suresh said with respite in rain, water receded automatically. He said they were taking all pre-cautions to continue their operations without any interruption.
