HYDERABAD: Justice M. B. Shah, Chairman, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, has said that the `commercial' education sector should be brought under the purview of the Consumer Protection Act if students were not be `misled' by institutions that do not provide promised services. Inaugurating a two-day seminar on `Effective implementation of Consumer Protection Act--sharing experiences of two decades' here on Saturday, he said that capitation fee collected for unrecognised courses should be refunded to the students.
The judge observed that consumer fora was entitled to take up cases relating to commercialisation of education. More than 26 lakh cases were filed before the Commission of which 23 lakh cases were disposed of in a reasonable time. High Court Chief Justice G.S.Singhvi, Commissioner Civil Supplies Banwarlal and Justice I. Venkatanarayana, Chairman of the State Commission also spoke.
