TIRUCHI: A two-day training programme on mediation for a select group of advocates from Tiruchi and its neighbouring districts commenced at the District Court Complex here on Saturday. As many as 43 advocates including 20 from the Tiruchi Bar, five from Thanjavur and five from Perambalur are participating in the programme, which is being conducted for the first time in Tiruchi. During the training programme, mediation trainers, who are advocates from the Madras High Court and experts in the field, would explain various aspects of mediation, a unique form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), to the participants. The basic techniques in mediation would also be discussed. The programme is being organised following the announcement made by the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court A.P.Shah during a recent visit to the city that mediation proceedings and lok adalats will be held on a monthly basis in Tiruchi, Karur, Thanjavur and Perambalur districts to promote alternative dispute resolution mechanism. Meditation proceedings would be held on second Saturdays of every month in the presence of judicial officers and lok adalats would be held on a continual basis on every third Saturdays, Mr. Shah had announced speaking at a workshop on alternative dispute resolution, organised by the District Legal Services Authority and the Bar Association of Tiruchi here, recently. Mediation is one of the forms of ADR, the others being arbitration, early neutral evaluation, private judging and screening panels. The objective of the programme is to train the advocates on mediation and the ways to facilitate the negotiations between the parties enabling them to find their own, mutually acceptable solutions. Inaugurating the training programme, the Principal District Judge, Tiruchi, P. Ramakrishnan, said the programme had commenced at Coimbatore. Judicial Magistrates are participating as observers in the training programme. Chief Judicial Magistrate Dheivaraj, First Additional District Judge V. Ramamurthy and other advocates participated in the inaugural session.
