MES formula opposed

KOCHI: The Association of Muslim Self-financing Engineering Colleges has opposed the Muslim Educational Society's (MES) formula to offer freeship in 50 per cent of seats in the engineering and medical colleges under it. A meeting of the association held here on Saturday came down heavily on the stand taken by the MES. The association will stick to the stand taken by the Kerala Self Financing Engineering College Managements Association to resolve the deadlock over admissions to the professional colleges. — Staff Reporter

Water pipeline bursts at Thammanam

KOCHI: A second pipeline of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) burst at Thammanam late on Saturday evening. This is the second pipeline burst in the area in three days. Officials at the KWA pump house at Thammanam said over two metres of the pipe broke at around 6 p.m. The 28-inch pipe was laid over 30 years ago. The incident comes in the wake of the KWA's attempts to provide water to more areas, especially in Cheranaloor. Repair works have started and water supply is scheduled to resume by Sunday evening. — Staff Reporter

Four arrested

KOCHI: The Hill Palace Police have arrested four persons on the charge of blackmailing a person, making him sign blank documents, and stealing cash and gold from him. The police said that Rajan Thalapilly, former executive officer of Chottanikkara Temple, was lured to the house of Ullu Murukan, Eroor, and forcibly made to sign documents. Money and gold ornaments were stolen and his nude photos taken. Those arrested are Boby Gupta (39), Murukadas (28), Subi P.G. (23), and Sunil Rajappan (22— Staff Reporter
