KOCHI: Councillors belonging to the United Democratic Front have complained that the ruling front in the Corporation is attempting to politicise the implementation of development projects under the JNNURM scheme. Councillor V.J. Hycinth raised the issue of Kochi Refineries Limited laying oil pipelines across the Subhash Chandra Bose Park. He was supported by T.J. Vinod and C.K. Gopalan. However, K.V. Manoj and K.J. Sohan told the council that the decision to allow the KRL to lay oil pipelines was taken at a council meeting in September 2002 at which most of the present councillors were present. There was also a complaint about the Corporation failing to honour cheques issued to contractors, to which the Mayor replied that it was not a new practice and it had been happening due to financial constraints faced by the local body. The Mayor intervened to stop the discussions, as no creative suggestions were coming forth. The council condoled the death of artist and sculptor M.R.D. Dathan and the former Deputy Mayor P.V. Radhakrishnan before beginning proceedings.
