IIT-M to offer PG degree on humanities

In an institution where most of the other students will be involved in science in one way or another, the few who are doing the humanities might feel slightly out of sync

The Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) department of the IIT , Madras is poised to offer a five-year integrated master's programme, leading to MA degree, from the academic year 2006-07. This programme will be offered in three disciplines — Development Studies, Economics and English Studies. The programme offers exposure to different fields of humanities in first two years, and then allows students to specialise in any of the three disciplines.

It also offers new avenues to enter the portals of IIT-M, one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. The idea of the humanities programme in a technological institution is to provide a well-rounded education, both for students of technology and for humanities, by drawing resources from each other's areas of expertise.
