Teacher dies in classroom

Bidar: A 50-year-old teacher in a government primary school died of cardiac arrest in his classroom at Mannaekhalli in Humnabad taluk on Friday. Mohammad Yusuf collapsed while teaching and students ran away scared. His colleagues shifted him to the hospital but was declared brought dead. — Staff Correspondent

Books stolen

Bidar: Books valued at Rs. 25,000 were stolen from a book stall in Humnabad on Saturday. Owner Basavaraj Kasuti complained to the police that the thieves might have used a duplicate key to open his shop. A case has been registered in the Humnabad town police station. — Staff Correspondent

Counselling centres

HUBLI: The women's wing of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee plans to start counselling centres in each district with the help of women advocates to guide women who are victims of exploitation. Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, former Minister and president of the KPCC Women's Wing Rani Satish said the women's wing would adopt villages to create awareness about women empowerment. She said the Block Congress women's wings would be formed soon and each block committee would adopt a village for creating awareness about public and personal health and law and related issues. — Staff Correspondent

CME programme

HUBLI: President of Cardiological Society of India's Karnataka Chapter B.V. Rajgopal has underscored the need for launching awareness campaigns to educate people about heart diseases. Inaugurating the Cardiological Society of India (CSI) North-West Karnataka Chapter and a Continued Medical Education (CME) programme on hypertension here on Sunday, Dr. Rajgopal said of late there had been alarming increase in the number of heart related problems in the country. Teachers' protest

MYSORE: Protesting against the State Government's failure to resume the Mahithi Sindhu computer education programme for students of government high schools in the State, the Mahithi Sindhu teachers in Mysore district are planning to take out a march here on Monday. Adressing a press conference, vice-president of the Mysore District Government High School Mahithi Sindhu Computer Teachers' Association Jagadish C.L. said the Janata Dal (Secular )-Bharatiya Janata Party Government had earlier promised to resume the programme by retaining the same computer education teachers from this academic year. — Staff Correspondent

Railways customer meet

Bangalore: A customer meet was organised by the South Western Railway on August 5. It was aimed at creating awareness about the customer- friendly initiatives of the railways in the past half a decade. Meeting postponed

Madikeri: The meeting convened by Kodagu district in-charge Minister Ramachandra Gowda in Bangalore on August 7 has been postponed. Problems faced by the district such as tribal rehabilitation, tree rights, elephant and tiger menace, status of class C&D lands, and calamity relief were among the issues scheduled to be discussed in the meeting.

KSOU courses

DHARWAD: Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysore, started various vocational courses and a postgraduate course in journalism in the current academic year, Vice-Chancellor Sudha Rao has said. She told presspersons here on Sunday that KSOU had started fifty-one courses.

It had made provisions for students to pursue a certificate course along with a degree course in the same academic year. Apart from study material, the university was also providing them audio-visual aids. Radio lectures on various subjects were broadcast through the FM channel, she said. — Staff Correspondent

Symposium on female foeticide

Bangalore: The police should be given an important role in the implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act to help prevent sex determination and destruction of the female foetus, N.S. Meghrikh, Inspector-General of Police, has said,

He was speaking at a symposium on female foeticide organised by the Sri Jain Swetambar Terapanth Mahila Mandal said here on Sunday. Mr. Meghrikh said the Act did not give any powers to the police.

"If the police department is allowed to play a significant role in nabbing the culprits who engage in sex determination or female foeticide, the conviction rate will probably be higher," he said. — Staff Reporter

Training programme for women

MYSORE: Sthree Shakthi Mahila Vedike in association with Small Industries Services Board will be jointly organising a month-long training programme in fashion designing, beauty course, spoken English, computer, screen printing and cookery for women from August 8.
