Bangalore: Mahadevi Tayi, Sarvodaya leader of the State and elder sister of late Ramakrishna Hegde, former Chief Minister, passed away here on Sunday. She was 101. A child widow, Mahadevi Tayi participated in the freedom movement in her native Sirsi taluk of Uttara Kannada district, including the `No tax campaign' of 1931, along with other members of her family. She went to jail six times in the erstwhile Bombay Presidency. She later took up Gandhian constructive work and lived in Sabarmathi Wardha ashrams. Mahadevi Tayi became a close follower of Acharya Vinoba Bhave. She was active in the Sarvodaya movement. Her birth centenary had been observed in recent months. She was the chief trustee of the Vishwaneedam Trust and was connected with the Vallabh Niketan. She had opened a home for the aged on the premises of the Gandhi Bhavan in Kumara Park East. She was also connected with various Gandhian organisations. Ramakrishna Hegde was much attached to his elder sister. His passing away shattered her. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has condoled the passing away of Mahadevi Tayi. In recognition of her services, the Government ordered a funeral for her with "police honours". The former Minister P.G.R. Sindhia said that Mahadevi Tayi was an ideal woman and a true Gandhian.
