Plea to declare Chittoor drought-hit

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: PCC spokesperson and Puttur MLA G. Muddukrishnama Naidu has appealed to Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to declare the entire Chittoor district as drought-hit.

Among the measures he sought were Rs.10-crore funds for drinking water, compensation and crop insurance for farmers, fodder for animals and supply of seed, fertilizers and pesticides on subsidised rate.

Mr. Naidu said that the rainfall witnessed during June-August was not even 20 per cent of the normal rainfall. He said that the groundnut crop sown in seven lakh acres and rain-fed crops like jowar, corn, vegetables and sugarcane in 50,000 acres had started withering, pushing the farmers into a debt trap. He said farm labourers should be provided work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
