Polling peaceful in Kurnool district

Voter turnout good despite tense situation in naxalite-hit villages

KURNOOL: Barring a few incidents, polling passed off peacefully in Kurnool district on Sunday. At Singanapalli in Owk mandal, a woman received bullet injury when the gunman of a Youth Congress leader opened fire after a clash.

According to reports, Challa Bhagiratha Reddy, District Youth Congress president and son of Koilkuntla MLA Challa Ramakrishna Reddy, went to the village accompanied by his gunmen to observe polling. However, the villagers who suspected foul play turned violent and pelted stones.

The gunman opened fire in which the woman Prameelamma was hurt. She was rushed to hospital.

At Palukur, the polling process was disrupted when two groups clashed. Re-polling was needed in five wards. In all 15 persons were hurt in the clash.

At Kanala in Dornipadu mandal, the police seized two country made bombs from a house. At Mettupalli in Owk, miscreants poured water into the ballot boxes.

Heavy turnout of voters was reported despite tense situation in scores of naxalite-infested villages. The encounter near Ahobilam also caused some anxiety. Superintendent of Police B. Malla Reddy camped at Nandyal and supervised the security arrangements.
