Padma awards for farmers Noted agricultural scientist Dr. M. S. Swaminathan has appealed to the State Government to recognise the immense contribution of farmers and recommend them for Padma awards. Such awards will definitely infuse life into farm sector. The country should not overlook their services. Because of their outstanding contribution India has become self-reliant in agriculture sector. In recent times, farmers' suicide had drawn the attention of all -- from public to policy makers. They are in trouble and now is the time to lend a helping hand - both morally and monetarily. Dr. M. Nazeeruddin Kurnool Problems of polling staff Polling personnel had a strange experience in many places in the recently conducted elections. To start with, the appointments were arbitrary. Personnel of higher cadre were drafted as polling officers instead of presiding offices in some places. Even the remuneration was left to the will of the authorities. The indifferent attitude of the officials was also distressing. There is a widespread criticism that all is not fair with the elections expenditure which is not audited. Is there any remedy to this? S. M. Basha Kurnool Give boost to Vedic studies The first-ever Vedic University -- `Sree Venkateswara Vedic University was set up at Tirumala recently. Vedic classes may be started from Intermediate level in the varsity. Students joining the Vedic Courses should be given all facilities and encouraged by way of scholarship. The courses should be job-oriented too. Lectures, professors, readers, researchers and academicians in this varsity should be treated on a par with those in other faculties. N. Devarajan Guntakal Some bitter truths Alcoholism has always been a menace. The Government can't be expected to implement a stringent policy since the revenue from liquor sales fills its coffers. Ban of liquor has remained a distant dream. Even the sale of cheap liquor is not being curbed. How long will this go on? M. Farida Begum Kurnool
