Diplomat prepares to leave

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Deepak Kaul, the Indian diplomat who Pakistan expelled on Saturday was scheduled to return to India by road through the Wagah border on Monday, Indian officials said.

Mr. Kaul, who was packing to leave on Sunday, declined a request for an interview.

The Foreign Office said New Delhi's expulsion of Syed Muhammed Rafique Ahmed, the political counsellor at the Pakistan High Commission, was "unfortunate" and "a clear act of retaliation".

Spokeswoman Tasneem Aslam told media that India had "targeted our innocent diplomat".
