Poland overpowers Japan

FUNABASHI: Poland overwhelmed Japan 35-33, 25-21, 25-17 here on Sunday to share first place in Pool A in the FIVB World League of volleyball. With the victory, Poland improved its record to 5-3, to catch up with the United States and Serbia and Montenegro in the division, while Japan remained at the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, in Moscow, Russia beat China 25-12, 25-17, 25-22 in a Group C match.

In another match of the group, host France lost 29-27, 25-27, 21-25, 26-24, 19-17 to Italy.

After seven rounds, Russia tops the group with 13 points with a 6-1 record while France (12) and Italy (10) stand in second and third places respectively.

On Saturday, the United States beat Serbia and Montenegro 27-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21 at Spokane, Washington, to regain a slender lead in Pool A. — Agencies
