KPCC flays Government

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary V. S. Sivakumar has blamed the State Government for the Centre's denial of granting international container terminal status to Vizhinjam citing security reasons. Though the United Democratic Government had cleared all formalities with regard to the Vizhinjam harbour, the Left Democratic Front Government did not show the political will to pursue the matter, he said in a statement here. - Staff Reporter

Onam metro fairs from August 21

KOCHI: Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd. (Supplyco) will run its Onam markets for more days this festival season than those in previous years, says a press release here.

The Onam metro fairs will be open from August 21 to Thiruvonam eve.

As many as 141 Onam markets will open for 10 days from August 26. These outlets will sell a whole range of provision items and vegetables. In the previous years, taluk-level Onam markets were open only for five days, says the press release. — Staff Reporter

Quiz for school students

Thiruvananthapuram: The British Council is organising a quiz programme, `Know UK Quiz,' from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 19 at AKG Hall. The quiz is open to students from classes 10 to 12.

Schools can send any number of teams of two members each.

There will be a preliminary round, followed by the semi-final and final rounds. Students of winning teams will get a year's membership of the British Library, apart from prizes. Soft drinks safe, says ISDMA

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Soft Drink Manufacturers' Association (ISDMA) has said that soft drinks are completely safe as they comply with stringent international norms and all applicable national regulations.

In a statement released here on Sunday, the ISDMA said the soft drink industry has worked with the Ministry of Health and Bureau of Indian Standards, scientific community and NGOs to establish stringent science- based norms and that these efforts of the Union Government had led to establishment of stricter norms on a par with the best in the world.

"We understand that the Ministry of Health is in the process of developing validated testing protocols to which all members of ISDMA are fully aligned," the statement added. — Special Correspondent

48-year-old man bags first rank

KOZHIKODE: A 48-year-old man has bagged first rank in the examination conducted by the District Literacy Mission for neo-literates. K. Mohandas, a student of the Continuing Education Centre at Kannadikulam in Cheruvannur-Nallalam Grama Panchayat limits, is the top scorer. Mr. Mohandas scored 47 marks out of 50. The oldest student in the continuing education programme in the district is 76-year-old T. Balu. He is a student of the Manjakadavu Continuing Education Centre in Koduvally Block Panchayat limits. — Staff Reporter

Free ration to fish workers

KOZHIKODE: Free ration will be provided to fish workers up to August 15, in view of the extension of the trawling ban, District Collector A. Jayatilak has said. The free rations, comprising rice and wheat, will be provided to workers of boats fitted with motors with capacities above 10 HP, associated workers who have registered themselves, those employed in fish landing centres and peeling centres, among others. Applications for getting free rations, in the requisite forms, must be submitted to the Fisheries Deputy Director, or the official concerned, a release says. — Staff Reporter
