THRISSUR: Minister for Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that steps will be taken to fill vacancies in the police force soon.

He was speaking after taking the salute at a passing-out parade of constables at the Kerala Police Academy here on Sunday.

Mr. Balakrishnan said nearly 2,000 police recruits were now undergoing training in the State. However, even after deploying them, there would be 2,000 vacant posts of constable. Recruitment to fill those vacancies would be conducted soon. The process of filling vacant posts of sub-inspectors was in the final stage. The Minister appealed to the police personnel to proceed against corruption. People and the State Government would evaluate the performance of the police based on their initiatives against corruption.

Pointing out that names of police personnel were increasingly getting mentioned in connection with controversies, he said members of the police force, who were expected to be upholders of the rule of law, should be vigilant against getting involved in unlawful activities.

Noting that highly qualified people were now joining the police force, the Minister said this would help the force create a better public image.

259 join the force

In all, 259 constables took part in the parade. Of them, one is an MBA degree holder and another a B.Tech. graduate. There are two B.Ed. degree holders, 14 postgraduates, 93 graduates, 29 industrial training certificate holders, 14 diploma holders, 70 who have passed the pre-degree course and 35 who have passed 10th standard.

Director-General of Police Raman Sreevastava and other senior officials were present.
