KOZHIKODE: Efforts are on under the aegis of the RTO, Vadakara, to curb the growing number of road accidents and create awareness on the need to observe road rules. In a release here, Motor Vehicles Inspector, Vadakara, M.P. Subbash Babu said the department had begun a drive under Vadakara RTO R. Jayaprasad to check speeding and curb accidents. The campaign, launched on July 1, is being carried out with a view to educating vehicle owners, drivers and others on the importance of observing road rules. He said 672 cases of violation of traffic norms were registered during the period. Fine amounting to Rs.3.10 lakhs was levied from the offenders. The checks were carried out in areas such as Vadakara, Chorode, Kunhippalli, Idacheri, Nadapuram, Kuttiadi, Thottilpalam, Perambra, Ulliyeri, Atholi, Chemancheri, Koilandi, Meppayur, and Payyoli. Special radars were used to detect speeding. He said cases had been registered against 42 drivers for rash driving. As many as 54 drivers were booked for not possessing valid driving licences. Action was taken in 98 cases where the insurance period of vehicles had expired. In seven cases, fine was levied from motorists for impolite behaviour towards the road traffic authority personnel. The RTO also seized 32 vehicles that were being operated without paying vehicles tax. The vehicles were released after payment of the tax. Steps had also been initiated against a number of lorries on the charge of carrying goods above the permitted weight. As many as 129 vehicles were detected to have certificates for smoke emission limits that had expired the time limit. The campaign also took action against autorickshaws which did not have the requisite permit, and cars and autorickshaws using cooking gas for running without obtaining permit. As many as 11 cases were fined for using mobile phones while driving. Vadakara Joint RTO R. Sreekumar; Motor Vehicle Inspectors Subbash Babu, V.V. Madhusudhanan, Abdul Shukkur and others participated in the drive to prevent violations of road rules.
