Warning issued against ragging

CHENNAI: The Anna University has warned students against any acts of ragging of junior students/freshers in any of its departments/campuses. Ragging is prohibited under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Ragging Act 1997 and any student found indulging in such an act is liable for imprisonment of up to two years, apart from being levied a fine of Rs 10,000, a circular from the chairman and dean, College of Engineering, Guindy, Vigilance Committee, said. Such students will not be admitted to any other educational institution. Students who wish to complain about ragging can contact 98410-11089 or (044) 2220 3285. — Special Correspondent

Panel to select VC

CHENNAI: The State Government has constituted a three-member search panel, under the chairmanship of K. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi, part-time member, State Planning Commission, to recommend possible candidates for appointment as Vice Chancellor of Madras University. The panel, which was notified through a G.O. issued by the Higher Education department on Wednesday last, will submit a list of three names to the Governor for appointment as VC, a press release here said. The panel also includes P. Jagadeesan, member, State Planning Commission and R.V. Dhanapalan. — Special Correspondent

Public forum on scrapping CET

CHENNAI: The M.Anandakrishnan committee that is examining the issue of scrapping the common entrance test for admission to professional undergraduate courses will hear the views of members of the public and representatives of educational institutions through two public hearings to be held in Chennai and Madurai.

While the Chennai forum will be held on August 7 at 11 a.m. at the Vivekananda Auditorium, Anna University, the Madurai forum will be held on August 13 at 11 a.m at Thyagaraja Engineering College, a release here said. Members of the public or representatives of educational institutions can either send in their representations through e-mail at lo@tndte.gov.in or in person to the committee members. — Special Correspondent

Custodial death: probe ordered

Villupuram: District Collector Ashish Chatterji has ordered an enquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer Muthiah into the death of a person under suspicious circumstances in the Arakandanallur police station on Saturday. In this connection, sub-inspector Senthil Kumar and four head constables — Palanisamy, Abdul Khader, Abdul Wahab and Yesu — have been placed under suspension.

Woman commits suicide

Nagercoil : A woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house on Sunday. According to the police, Thankarani, wife of Ayyathurai of Thammbathukonam near here, took this extreme step when Chandrakumar, her husband's friend, teased her.

House burgled

Nagercoil : The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons, who burgled the house of a retired engineer on Sunday. According to the police, Arul (56) of Nagercoil went to a church along with his family members, when some persons entered his house through back portion and decamped with household articles and Rs.21,000 in cash.

Ganja seized, two held

THENI : A special team of Narcotics Intelligence Bureau police led by the Inspector, A. Thangavelu, arrested two persons and seized 20 kg of ganja during a surprise vehicle check on the foot hills of Cumbummettu near Cumbum in the district on Sunday. — Staff Reporter

Railway reservation centre inaugurated

KARAIKAL : R.Velu, Union Minister of State for Railways, on Sunday, inaugurated the fully computerised passenger reservation centre of the Southern Railway at the Municipal Tourist Home on the Bharathiar Road here.

The Minister said that the computerised reservation centre was the 144th in the Southern Railway and 93rd in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The centre which is set up at a cost of Rs.8 lakh would function from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., he said.

Pensioners' plea

Tiruchi: The Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens and Pensioners Welfare Association has urged the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take steps to create separate Directorates for Senior Citizens in all the States. The State general secretary of the association, S. M. Chellasamy, in a memorandum also sought an increase in the concession accorded to senior citizens in Railway fares from 30 to 50 per cent. The interest rate on deposits made by senior citizens in nationalised banks should be increased to 9 per cent, he demanded.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 108.09 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 7,471 cusecs and the outflow 18,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

ERODE: Two persons died in a road accident near Vellakoil on Friday.

According to the police, Murugesan (28) and his brother Kanakaraj (26) of Avinashipalayam in Coimbatore district came to Avinashipalayam to attend his father's ceremony on Friday.

They were on their way to Vellakoil, where kanakaraj works, on a moped when a

lorry hit the vehicle killing them on the spot.

The Vellakoil police have launched a manhunt for the lorry driver. - Staff Reporter

Electrocuted

ERODE: A farmer was electrocuted on his field here on Saturday.

According to the police, Saminathan (40) was cutting grass on his land at Sikkiripalayam near Sathyamangalam when he came into contact with a snapped live wire.

He died on the spot. The Sathyamangalam police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter
