Hyderabad: The Laser sailing National championship was inaugurated at the Hussainsagar lake here on Sunday. The chief guest was M.M. Pallam Raju, Minister of State for Defence, and among those present were Lt. General Arvind Mahajan, president Laser Class Association of India, J. Hari Narayan, Chief Secretary Govt of AP, T.K. Dewan, chairman AP Tourism Development Corporation, Asadulla Pasha, president Secunderabad Club and other army and civilian officials. The sailors went through a practice race and the well known names such as N.S. Johal, Rajesh Choudhary, D.P. Selvam, Dharmender and others had a feel of the waters under the existing conditions. Local sailors Arjun Padipak, Dinesh Boorugu and Anirudh are expected to do well since they have been practising regularly at this venue and are familiar with the wind conditions and shifts. Most of the sailors expressed confidence that the competitions will be very keen and performances will be above average since wind conditions are extremely favourable. The city has seen three days of almost non-stop rains accompanied by heavy winds and on Sunday too the winds conditions were very encouraging for sailors. The event is being supported by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, Nagarjuna Fertilisers, Fortune Katriya Group, Seagrams India Ltd, Marriott Hyderabad, SBI, Amul, Bisleri, UTI, UB Group and Chermas Hyderabad.
