Amuda stars for SAI

Chennai: Three goals by Amuda highlighted the trophy triumph for Sports Authority of India (Chennai) in the D.S. Rajamanickam and Chadrakala Ghatala women's hockey tournament over Ashok Memorial Club at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Sunday. SAI won 4-0 after leading 3-0 at half-time.

The outcome marked SAI's third win in the four-team round-robin league. SAI gathered the full nine points. Ashok Memorial had six points, followed by IHM (Avadi), and Erode District XI.

Amuda gave SAI the lead in the ninth minute and added one before the breather. Her third goal came within a minute on resumption. Jennifer Ruby scored the other goal preventing a hat-trick for Amuda.

YMCA lifts title

At Coimbatore, host YMCA got the better of Rajalakshmi Sports Club 76-62 to lift the title in the 52nd YMCA basketball tournament for men for the S. Venkatakrishnan Trophy at the YMCA courts on Sunday.

YMCA dominated its opponent for most part of the game. The first three quarters saw Akilan (21), Sathish (24) and Syed (17) making merry along the flanks. The trio broke open the defence time and again to score points at will.

In the third quarter, Rajalakshmi tried its best to halt the free-flowing forwards, but found them too stronger.

In the fourth quarter, however, it managed to thwart the efforts of the trio, and in the process increased its tally through Guru's (23) single-handed contribution. The Rajalakshmi men scored as many as 26 points in last quarter as against YMCA's 15, but it was not enough.

The results (final): YMCA 76 (Akilan 21, Sathish 24, Syed 17) bt Rajalakshmi SC 62 (Guru 23); semifinals: Rajalakshmi 72 bt PSG CAS 68.
