ELURU: The cyclonic rain has caused three deaths and heavy crop loss in West Godavari district. According to information, Vipparthi Anjaneyulu, 21, of Parimella village in Pentapadu mandal was washed away in Vayyeru Kalva. His body is yet to be traced. Venkata Rao, 46, of Repallivada in Koyyalagudem mandal died at his residence when an uprooted tree fell on him. Another person, P. Subba Rao, kept in a relief camp at Polavaram, reportedly died while undergoing treatment on Sunday. Heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, played havoc with crops. Paddy nurseries in an extent of 675 hectares and standing paddy crop in another 11,900 hectares were marooned. Sugarcane in 652 hectares, maize in 175 hectares, cotton in 1,000 hectares, banana in 2,200 hectares and vegetables in 743 hectares were damaged. The official machinery is yet to estimate the financial loss caused to farmers.
Houses damaged
Meanwhile, 180 houses were fully and 458 houses partially damaged in the district, mainly in Polavaram mandal. The Godavari river bunds developed breaches at 20 places, while Kovvada Kalva, Yarra Kalva, Tammileru and Jalleru continued to be in spate. The water level at Dhavaleswaram Barrage on the Godavari was recorded at 22.3 feet by Sunday evening and 27.63 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from the barrage.
Aerial survey
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy made an aerial survey in Polavaram area. Nakkala drain in Narsapur revenue division developed breaches at Lakshmipuram posing threat of floods to villages in Yalamanchili, Poduru and Achanta mandals.
