GUNTUR: Tenali Revenue Division in Guntur district recorded the highest voter turnout of 87 per cent surpassing that of other two divisions during the final phase of the panchayat elections held on Sunday. The elections passed off peacefully without any untoward incident. In Narsaraopet division, re-poling was ordered in 18 places while it was ordered in four places in Guntur division. Guntur revenue division recorded 85 per cent voter turnout while Narsaraopet division recorded 86 per cent. A minor clash between workers belonging to the Telugu Desam and the Congress was reported from Pedaitikampadu village in Ponnur mandal. However, no one was injured.
Woman dies
An elderly woman, Vadlamudi Anasuyavathi of Kannegantivaripalem village in Bhattiprolu mandal, died after witnessing a verbal duel between the workers of the TDP and the Congress outside a polling booth. Elections in 11 panchayats, where polling was cancelled due to floods, would be held on Wednesday, said District Panchayat Officer P. Radhakrishna. A new date for polling in panchayats in Narsaraopet division, where none filed nominations, was fixed for August 21.
