Election put off in one village; eight hurt in clashes

Srikakulam: Booth capturing and pelting of stones resulting in postponement of election in one village and injures to several persons marked the third and final phase of election to gram panchayatas in Palakonda division of Srikakulam district on Sunday.

Early queuing

Like in the first two phases, there was heavy turnout of voters and enthusiastic voters had lined up before polling stations by 7 am.

Continuous drizzle in many parts of the division notwithstanding, 77 per cent of voters exercised their franchise.

At Bejji village in Veeraghattam mandal some miscreants took away the ballot box with more than 300 votes.

Election was cancelled here.

It was reported that there were clashes between two groups in Balakayalavalasa and Bejji villages, resulting in injuries to eight persons.

Election in five villages in the division had already been cancelled because of heavy rain which had made these villages inaccessible.
