Polls postponed

Sangaredy: Third phase elections in 17 panchayats of Kangti mandal and three panchayats of Narayankhed mandal were postponed by Medak district Collector B. Venkatesam on Sunday following heavy rain in these areas. In Narayankhed, elections were postponed in Chapta-K, Hangarga and Hangarga-B due to inaccessible conditions. Many villages in the two mandals were marooned in floodwater as a result of which polling staff and election material could not reach their destinations. — Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: The third phase of gram panchayat elections in Nirmal division would be held on Thursday, according to an official press release here on Sunday. The election was postponed from the scheduled August 6 because of heavy rainfall. — Staff Reporter

Pilgrim missing

KURNOOL: A pilgrim from Chennai who got into the Tungabhadra river at Mantralayam in Kurnool district was feared drowned on Sunday. According to reports, Mr. L.N. Narayan and three others got into the river for bathing. Mr. Narayan got washed away by the current. The police and revenue officials launched search operations engaging professional divers and mechanised boat of Central Water Commission. Staff Reporter

NCC camp from today

TIRUPATI: NCC's Tirupati unit will be conducting a Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC-VII) at Bhudevi Pilgrims Complex at Alipiri from August 7 to 18. The camp, to be conducted by the 5 Andhra Girls Battalion, will be attended by 600 cadets from all over Chittoor, Nellore and Kadapa districts, covered under the group. A series of guest lectures will be conducted on various social awareness topics. Staff Reporter

Araku toll up at 12

VISAKHAPATNAM: The death toll in the landslide caused due to heavy rain at Kodipunjulavalasa, 10 km from Araku, went up to 12 with the villagers identifying five more bodies at Jolaput.

A few villagers who went to Jolaput, about 20 km from their village, returned on Sunday with the information that they had identified five more persons including a five-year-old girl. The revenue officials were yet to confirm the deaths. Jolaput, near Padua road, falls in neighbouring Orissa's Koraput district. - Staff Reporter

Naidu for Srikakulam

Srikakulam: Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu will arrive on a two visit to the district on Monday. He will reach Srikakulam town in the afternoon, visit some of the flood-affected areas and proceed to Narasannapeta and Pathapatnam Assembly segments in the evening. He will make a night halt at Srikakulam. On Tuesday Mr. Naidu will visit flood-hit areas in Rajam and Palakonda and proceed to Vizianagaram district in the evening. - Special Correspondent

Gouthami breached

Kakinada: Gouthami, a branch of the Godavari, which is in spate has breached near Senapalli Lanka of Ayinavilli mandal on Sunday evening. Fourteen villages were flooded and people are being shifted to safer places.

East Godavari district Collector M. Subrahmanyam and SP Srinivasulu are camping at the spot supervising the relief and rescue operations. - Correspondent

Record `hundi' income

TIRUMALA: The famous Hill temple of Lord Venkateswara netted a record income of Rs. 1.30 crores through its `hundi' on Sunday in a single day. According to the temple officials this was considered the second highest record income in the temple history. Sources revealed that the hundi also registered a major single offering of Rs. 17.5 lakhs besides several kg of gold, silver, diamonds and other precious stones. - Staff Reporter

World Telugu meet

HYDERABAD: The Vanguri Foundation of America will conduct the first World Telugu Literary convention on December 31 and January 1, 2007 in Hyderabad.

The convention would offer a platform for Telugu lovers from all parts of the world to meet and exchange their ideas with regard to development and growth of Telugu literature, founder president of the foundation Chitten Raju Vanguri told reporters on Sunday.

He said the theme of the convention would be `Telugu literature-Today and Tomorrow'. - Special Correspondent

Theft in temple

Kakinada: Gold and silver ornaments of goddess Isweryambika in the temple situated on the premises of Sreepeetham in Ramanaiahpet area here were stolen on Friday night. The value of the stolen ornaments was estimated to be over Rs. 2 lakhs. Archakas noticed the theft the next morning. - Correspondent

Maoists kill tribal youth

WARANGAL: Maoists reportedly killed a tribal youth at Karlayi village in Kothaguda mandal on late Saturday night. According to the information, some unidentified men picked up one Chunchu Venkanna (30), a farmer, on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, he was found grievously injured on the road at Thirumalgandi village outskirts. His right arm was fractured and two bullet injuries were found on his body. A letter reportedly signed by one Ramesh of CPI Maoist Narasampet area committee was found which branded him as a police informer. - Staff Reporter

TDP activist murdered

KADAPA: A Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activist Dandu Chenchanna (62), was stabbed to death in Peddamudiyam mandal on Sunday. Another TDP supporter M. Ramasubbaiah stabbed Chenchanna to death in retaliation to the killing of Ramasubbaiah's brother Peddaiah 10 years ago, the police said. - Staff Reporter
