Sriramsagar crest gates opened

5.5 lakh cusecs of water being let out; minor and medium irrigation projects almost full



IN FULL FLOW: Water gushing out from the Sriramsagar Project after the 42 gates were opened on Saturday night.

NIZAMABAD: All the 42 crest gates of Sriramsagar Project were opened as water level reached 1,084.70 ft as against its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 1,091 ft on Sunday evening.

The inflows, which were 6.17 lakh cusecs at 11a.m. went down to 3.74 lakh cusecs by evening, engineers said. In view of continuous heavy discharges from Vishnupuri project in Maharashtra about 5.50 lakh cusecs was being let out from the project.

The authorities said that the reservoir presently had 66 tmc of water as against its total capacity of 90 tmc.

It would be filled in the next couple of days given the inflows from the upper reaches in the Godavari, they added.

In Nizam Sagar, the second biggest project in the district with a capacity of 17.28 tmcf, the water level touched 1,397 ft as against the FRL of 1,405 ft. Minor and medium irrigation projects like Pocharam, Kalyani, Singeetam, Koulasnala and Ali Sagar were almost full.

Three washed away

Meanwhile, three persons of a fishermen family were reportedly washed away in the Godavari at Ummeda village in Nandipet mandal, zero point of the Guthpa lift irrigation scheme in the wee hours.

They were identified as Gali Gangaraju (45), Basavaraju (16) and Durga Bhavani (14).

They were migrants from Vizag. The accident occurred when Gangaraju was shifting them in a raft amid increasing water level.

However, his wife survived as she was shifted earlier.
