ADILABAD: The 450 villagers of Kamai, just off the NH 7 on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra are used to flooding of Penganga every year. However, they were unprepared for this situation when water began flowing into the meagre dwellings at about 3 a.m. on Sunday. "At about 4 a.m. the residents of the new weaker sections colony had to be taken to a safe place on higher altitude. By 5 a.m. 50 houses in the colony were submerged ," recounted Kamai upasarpanch B. Sanjiv Reddy. . There was no way relief could have reached them because the village was cut off from all sides. "The railway line offered the only way out. Though the track was flooded, but it did not seem threatening. The villagers were made to wade through chest deep waters to the safety of the nearby Mandagadh and Gimma villages. People in these villages provided us with food. Later, the Revenue Divisional Officer P. Rajaram led a relief team here," said Mr. Reddy. People in other villages had not been so fortunate because no relief could be provided to them during the day.
TDP demand
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) urged the Government to provide immediate relief to thousands of people marooned in villages on the banks of the swollen Penganga. The villages have remained cut off since Friday night. After touring the affected villages in Jainad mandal, Adilabad Zilla Parishad Chairman Rathod Ramesh told reporters on Sunday that Rs. 30-crore worth property was lost while crop in 50,000 acres was affected.
