NALGONDA: More than 80 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in gram panchayat elections for 229 villages in 14 mandals in Nalgonda district. About 20 persons including three police personnel sustained injuries in poll-related violence in Miryalaguda division.

Eight Telugu Desam activists were injured when rivals allegedly manhandled them during polling at Kommepally in Devarakonda mandal.

One of the injured persons was shifted to Hyderabad and his condition was critical, sources said.

A Home Guard was injured when an irate group pelted stones at a police party at Gajinagar in the same mandal after the declaration of results.

The police arrested two women on the charge of pelting stones on a police team.

Seven persons were injured in a clash between the CPI (M) and the Congress activists at Ganugubanda in Garidepally mandal while a mob partially damaged a RTC bus at Talla Malkapuram in the same mandal.

Two constables, one each at Janpahad in Neredugomma and Murupunutala in Chandampet mandal, sustained injuries while controlling the mob, SP M.M.Bhagwat said.

Police had to use force to disperse clashing groups at Gajinagar, Talla Malkapuram, Matur (Tripuraram mandal) and Kanapur (Dindi mandal).

District Collector K. Vijayanand claimed that the administration could conduct three-phased elections without giving a scope for a single re poll.

Police fire in air

Warangal: Polling was held for the panchayats in Warangal and Jangoan revenue divisions. Police were forced to open fire in the air to disperse an agitating mob Rayaparthi mandal while at Koripalli village of Kodakandla mandal, the police lathicharged two groups during the polling.

Children on poll duty

Sangareddy: Tension prevailed at Beeramguda polling booth here with the TDP supported candidate Sashikala alleging that the Congress activists from outside had rigged the polls.

In Masanpalli and Rudraram, schoolchildren were put on poll duties due to shortage of personnel. Casting of votes in most of the booths in Kohir mandal - like Kaveli and Kohir - were held under candlelight, as there was no power supply.

Mahabubnagar: In Mahabubnagar district, 78 percent of voters exercised their franchise for panchayats in Gadwal and Narayanpet divisions.

Minor clashes between police and supporters of candidates were reported from Amarchintha and Makthal towns but they did not affect the polling process.

Polling peaceful

Karimnagar: Polling was peaceful in Karimnagar division, which recorded a polling percentage of 76 per cent. However, polling was not held in Chokkaraopalli village of Bejjanki mandal as the village was cut off due to rain.

Election was also put off in the second ward of Ramavaram village of Husnabad mandal following `irregularities' in the printing of ballot papers.
