TAMBARAM : The cost of the underground drainage network project currently on in Pallavaram Municipality has increased by Rs. 7.62 crore. While giving their nod for the increased cost during a meeting on Friday, councillors sought to know the reasons for the same. Pointing out that the project was on since January this year, the elected representatives also sought a clarification on how the additional funds would be mobilised and wondered if the expenses would have be borne by the local body or its residents. Municipal Chairman P. Dhan Singh informed the council that the initial estimates prepared for the project put the cost at Rs. 50. 16 crore. During a meeting at the local body's premises in July in which senior officials from different government departments took part, it was pointed out that the project needed another Rs. 7.62 crore. The increased cost was mainly due to road-cutting and re-routing of pipelines. In the original plan it was proposed to sink sewers along Pallikaranai Marsh to the sewage treatment plant. In order to avoid that, it was later proposed to lay the main pipelines adjacent to the sewers of Alandur Municipality's project. The additional sum of Rs. 7.62 crore could be availed from Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund, Mr. Dhan Singh informed the council.
