The book bank gives books to economically weak students

CHENNAI: Books brought smiles to many faces at the Vani Mahal with some being donated to the Sri Sumati Vishal Jain Book Bank on Sunday.

While more than 200 first year engineering students received textbooks from Greater Chennai Additional Commissioner of Police S.R. Jangid, another 700 got textbooks and other materials for their graduation studies.

"This year we have distributed 10,935 books to 978 students. We accepted the application forms attested by various city colleges and later screened them on the basis of economic criteria. We ensured that brilliant students should not be deprived of text books," said trustee Nirmal Nahar. While Mr. Jangid congratulated the organisers for running the show in aid of needy students, actress Namitha made a donation of Rs. 10,000 as part of the `Sponsor a Student' for a year scheme.

"We were able to collect Rs. 3.5 lakh today," said trustee Kishan Jain. The show runs not just on donations but beneficiary students giving back the books they received after they finish their examinations.
