MANGALORE: Authorities of National Highway division here are sceptical of the future of highways in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts owing to lack of periodic maintenance. The three main national highways 13, 17 and 48 pass through the two districts. An official of the National Highways division here cited the lack of funds as the major problem. As per Ministry standards, the National Highways in districts with 1,500 mm of rainfall annually and a vehicle density of more than 1,500 have to be asphalted every four years. However, the two coastal districts receive an average of 4,500 mm of rainfall annually and the density of commercial vehicles operating here is 7,500. The movement of overloaded lorries with iron ore, granite, timber and liquefied petroleum gas have further worsened the condition of highways.
