Mangalore
Provide safety gear Sir, Municipal workers in Udupi, who load and unload garbage, do not wear gloves, gumboots and masks. This is highly hazardous. They are susceptible to diseases related to respiratory and digestive systems and also skin diseases. It is time the authorities concerned provided the equipment to the workers and ensured that they used them while at work. T. Angara, Kidiyoor (Udupi district) Malaria prevention Sir, The authorities are concerned about malaria only when the monsoon sets in. The action committee on malaria prevention takes some preventive steps and educates people about the disease. Though the malaria awareness month is over, there are a number of mosquito breeding places in the city, especially on grounds and by the side of the road. Many of the drains are blocked and roads are full of potholes where water stagnates and turns into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Authorities of the Mangalore City Corporation should spray chemicals at least once a week to eradicate malaria. J.F. D'Souza, Mangalore Primary health unit needed Sir, Residents of Vidyamanyanagar are put to hardship owing to the absence of a primary health unit in the area. Several requests to the authorities concerned in this regard have gone in vain. Setting up a primary health unit will not only help the residents of the area but also poor people who live in nearby villages. K.R. Raghavendra Rao, Bangalore Encroachments Sir, Land grabbing and encroachment have become rampant in Jayanagar and J.P. Nagar. Houses are built under high-tension poles, near drains and on civic amenity sites. Contractors dump sand, stone and bricks on playgrounds. Several unauthorised food stalls have come up there. There has been no response from the local corporators and Bangalore Mahanagara Palike authorities to complaints against these irregularities. The drainage system is in a bad shape in the 9th Cross Road. Residents of 17th Main and 14th Main had to pump out water from their houses when rains occurred recently. The road between Diwakar Hospital and 8th Main is also in a bad shape. H. Raju, Bangalore Dedicated lanes Sir, The Bangalore traffic police are planning dedicated lanes for autorickshaws (The Hindu, July 4). It is important to have dedicated lanes for city buses which do not always stop at the designated stops. Such lanes for buses, wherever feasible, will be more useful than lanes for autorickshaws. The police should ensure that footpaths are free of encroachments. Even the newly laid pavements are being used for parking of vehicles. K.V. Pathy, Bangalore Readers can email their letters to letters. mangalore@ thehindu.co.in
