COIMBATORE: Presidents of panchayats in Coimbatore district have called for speedy sanction of development works in their local bodies. They have also demanded revision of water charges, according to the quantum supplied to the panchayats. At its recent meeting here, the Coimbatore District Panchayat Presidents Welfare Association said despite the sanction of funds for many development works in the panchayats, administrative sanction was yet to be given. Calling for immediate sanction, the association also called for quick clearance of works to be taken up with funds under the Twelfth Finance Commission. The association regretted the withdrawal of clearance for works to be taken up under the Rural Self-sufficiency Scheme and basic infrastructure schemes. These works were to be carried out with public contributions as well. Therefore, considering their importance, the works must be cleared again. The association also wanted water charges to be collected according to quantum of water used by the local bodies under various schemes. Claiming that the panchayats paid for more than what they consumed, it wanted water meters fixed on overhead tanks to arrive at the exact amount of consumption and charges.
