Indian Academy of Paediatrics launches website

KOCHI: The Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Kochi branch has put up a website www.iapcochin.net.tf to educate all mothers and those taking care of babies and children.

Launched a couple of months ago as part of the awareness campaign during the ongoing Breast Feeding Week, the website is intended to provide accurate information.

Though the website is still under production, two pages of information of oral rehydration solution (ORS) in Malayalam and English and two pages of information on breast feeding, with special focus on IMS (Infant Milk Substitutes) Act has been provided.

Academy Times, a bulletin of the IAP, Cochin, is also on the site giving details about various programmes or study papers on certain topics. As part of the awareness campaign for the IMS Act by the district branch of IAP, educational workshops were held for anganwadi teachers, Kudumbasree units, nursing students, doctors and the public.

Member paediatricians are supposed to refuse any promotional samples given by the companies producing milk substitutes and the IAP is also bound to refuse any sponsorship from these companies for any of the programmes, Mohan George, Secretary of IAP, Kochi, said.

Breast milk contains antibodies that protect the infant for about nine months and more, he said. "We tell the mothers to breast feed their child till about one-and-a-half to two years. Semi solids are advised only after six months. However, this is not followed strictly by working women, Dr. George said.
