Youth drowns

KOCHI: Ayub, a 19-year-old student of a local technical institute, drowned in a pond in Kalamasserry on Sunday afternoon. He had reportedly gone to the pond at the Kinfra compound along with friends for taking bath. He slipped into the depths and could not swim to safety, according to the police. — Staff Reporter

Quiz programme

KOCHI: The Quiz Club of St.Peter's College, Kolencherry, will conduct `In-Quest 2006,' inter-collegiate quiz contest, on August 10 at the college indoor stadium. Teams representing arts and science colleges can participate. The teams securing the first, second and third places will be given cash awards of Rs.2000, Rs.1000 and Rs.500 respectively. Malabar cultural festival

KOCHI: The Malabar Cultural Association will organise `Mamankam' Karkkidaka festival on August 11 at the Ernakulam Town Hall. Cultural programmes with the characteristic flavour of Malabar such as Mappilapattu and Kolkkali will be staged as part of the festival.

KOCHI: The leadership camp of the Ernakulam District Construction and General Workers' Union, affiliated to AITUC, will be organised on August 12 and 13.
