Thiruvananthapuram: The City Corporation's electric crematorium at Thycaud will become operational in October, Corporation Secretary T.K. Raveendran has informed the Ombudsman for Local Self-Government Institutions. This was disclosed in an affidavit filed before the Ombudsman in a case filed by the Human Rights Law Network against the Mayor and the Corporation Secretary. The petition observed that the electric crematorium has been non-functional for many years. This, it said, had caused much hardship to the public. Mr. Raveendran's affidavit pointed out that the Corporation had prepared a Rs.3.5-crore project for the integrated development of the crematorium. Efforts were on to secure an assistance of Rs.1.75 crores from the Government.
Three phases
The balance amount had been earmarked in the Corporation's budget, he added. The project would be executed in three phases. The ongoing work on the first phase involves the construction of a new building and two electric furnaces. The Corporation has already tendered the second phase estimated to cost Rs.56.07 lakhs. This involves reconstruction of the existing building and erecting a mandapam in front of the main structures for people to offer `bali' to the departed souls. The affidavit said the estimate for the third phase was under preparation. The work includes parking lot, garden and public comfort stations. A sum of Rs.66 lakhs has been spent on the project. Mr. Raveendran told the Ombudsman that the inconveniences highlighted in the petition could be resolved once the project was completed.
