Complaint lodged against Army

Staff Reporter

Army rejects company's charge

BANGALORE: A private company has complained to the police stating that the Army has blocked the entry to its premises and has partly occupied its land on Cubbon Road. However, the Army maintained that the property belonged to the Defence Ministry and the company had a its own entrance.

Land measuring 1.25 acres out of three acres at No. 41 (Old No 28) abutting Infantry Cross Road leading to Cubbon Road is the property in question. The Army deployed armed guards after fencing the property on Saturday.

In hit complaint to the police, Krishnan from Universal Trading Company Private Ltd. said the 1.25 acres of land was forcibly acquired by defence personnel on Saturday. The complainant said they had been enjoying the property for a long time and had been paying property tax.

However, the Army said the property had been in its possession and the High Court had given a verdict in its favour in 1990. Station Commander of the Karnataka, Kerala and Goa Sub Area, Samuel, told The Hindu that the land was lying vacant and the Army decided to make use of it. He added that they had fenced the property.

On the allegation of the company, Brigadier Samuel said the company used to access its premises through the land in question.

However, the Army closed the entry to utilise the space and the private company had another access, he added.

The Army maintained that the company was attempting to mislead the police and the public by claiming ownership of the property. The stretch of the land had been in its possession since the 1900s and had not been leased out to the private party, he said.

The company was attempting to make use of land abutting Infantry Cross Road leading to Cubbon Road as its main entrance, which was in the Army's possession, he said.

The Army had training facilities on that particular stretch and the company's claim was illegal, Brigadier Samuel said.
