Bangalore: Meridian Mobile, part of the U.K.-based Meridian Group, launched GSM phones with the brand name "Fly." The cellphone, which caters to the mid-range, was launched by actor Shrutha Keerthi here on Saturday in the absence of Malaika Arora Khan, the brand ambassador of "Fly," who was unable to make it to Bangalore. At the press conference got up in connection with the launch, chief executive officer of Meridian Mobile (India) Rajiv Khanna said the focus would be on "branding and forging alliances" with retailers. The marketing spend in the first year would be around Rs. 9 crore, he said. The trade had evinced interest in the product which had most of the features of high-end mobile phones, but at affordable prices. The products would be available across the country, beginning with multi-store outlets and later include exclusive showrooms, he said. The State, he said, was an emerging market after Delhi and Mumbai, and Meridian would target the youth in all the cities. The company plans to sell about 2.5 lakh phones in the first year of its operations with a turnover of Rs. 100 crore, according to him. The phones would be available in the price range of Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 15,000. The company had earmarked high-end phones which would include mega-pixel camera, Bluetooth, MP3 player, etc., too for the Indian market.
