Postal Department to deliver the documents through speed post Department of Posts to deliver documents through speed post

  • Road Transport Authority on the verge of finalising deal with the Department of Posts
  • The documents will be delivered three days from the date of issue, says official
  • The scheme will help police track people involved in accidents and other incidents

HYDERABAD: Driving licences and registration certificates (RCs) of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers in the city will soon be delivered by speed post.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) is on the verge of finalising a deal with the Indian Postal Service.

Joint Transport Commissioner B. Venkateswarlu says the Department of Posts has finalised its service charges (Rs. 21) for collecting the certificates from RTA and delivering them to applicants.

    In a week's time?

"The proposal is being forwarded to the Transport Commissioner for consideration and if things go well, it will come into effect in a week," he says.

Once the proposal comes by, it will be mandatory for the applicants to pay Rs. 21 along with a self-addressed envelope. "Certificates will be delivered through post in three days from the date of issue," he says.

    Beneficial to RTA

Describing the proposal as a benefit to both applicants and the RTA, the Joint Transport Commissioner says there will be confirmation of certificate reaching the applicant as the Department of Posts will be taking the acknowledgement and the applicants need not come to the RTA frequently.

Moreover, it will be helpful for the Police Department in zeroing in on people in cases of accidents and for other enquiries.

    `Precautions taken'

Earlier, as a pilot project, the RTA delivered licences through RTA Post charging Rs.25 under optional scheme. However, the scheme was dropped due to some technical snags.

"This time, all precautions are being taken. When important documents like passports are being delivered through post, we do not find it a task in despatching driving licenses and registration certificates," Mr. Venkateswarlu says.
